find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats and it will tell you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. take 300-400calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones.
5-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
8 glasses of water a day.
4-6 times a week cardio work out for 30-50min plus light weight training.
no junk food, no sodas, no white flour (white bread, pasta, cookies, cakes etc)

Actually, it does not harm if you have snacks or something like that. Just remember the food pyramid, the main goal is to keep everything balanced. Less sugar and fat, more wheat, vegetables and medium portions of meat. Excercise also helps burn the fat, but don't push yourself too hard, do more excercise day by day, like doing 10 push-ups in Monday, and just +10 after each day. Try decreasing a little of the amount from your meals every day, and just stay away from the television because there might be commercials relating to fast food, that's the greatest temptation......
Just forget about how much you're starving for a little more food. You might just end up eating a lot instead.
You'll just have to do this until you've reach the weight goal, won't be long! By then you'll find that you'll be getting used to eating less than you usually eat when you're fat. Keep the amount of food, and the excercise, that'll maintain the weight!

Here's an interesting one I just came across in an older issue of Prevention:
Quickly check ingredient labels for the phrase "partially hydrogenated". According to a study by Wake Forest University School of Medicine's researchers, not all calories are equal. Trans fats release more calories than other fats during digestion (and even when nutrition labels say "0 grams trans fats", they might still say "partially hydrogenated" under ingredients! This means that they still have trans fats, but they don't equal up to a gram per serving.). Test monkeys in the study (they metabolize fats in the same way as humans) "gained three times more weight on an 8% trans fat diet than others fed the same number of calories with no trans fat."

Scarey, huh? It definitely made me a bit paranoid. (Do note the percentage of trans fats the monkeys were fed was rather high. "The average woman eats 3.9 grams of trans fats per day from partially hydrogenated oils..." I'm guessing that if you did some math with the average number of grams of food women eat total, the 3.9 grams of trans fats would definitely not equal up to 8%.)

Start excercising. Walking is great this time of year. Eat more fruits and veggies and drink lots of water. Good luck.
