One method, for garden-variety hiccups, is suggested by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Gently massaging the back of the roof of the mouth with a cotton-tipped swab for a minute or so often helps, the clinic suggests.

A hiccup involves the diaphragm, the sheet of muscles in the chest that controls breathing and separates the chest from the abdomen, and the vocal cords in the voice box. When a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm is accompanied by a quick closure of the vocal cords, the ``hiccup'' sound occurs.

The phrenic nerves, which run from neck to chest, normally coordinate the smooth contraction of the two leaves of the diaphragm, and hiccups may result from any irritation, mild or severe, anywhere along the path of a phrenic nerve.

Prevention is another option, though the cause of hiccups is usually not dangerous or even obvious, according to the American Medical Association. They are common after eating a big meal or drinking a lot of alcohol.

In some rare cases, the cause may be a condition that severely irritates the diaphragm or its nerves. These conditions include inflammation of the chest lining (pleurisy), pneumonia, some stomach and esophagus disorders, inflammation of the pancreas, alcoholism and hepatitis.

Attacks of hiccups are usually intermittent and brief and stop of their own accord. In the rare cases where hiccuping is prolonged, drugs may be used, and very rarely, surgery to deaden nerves to paralyze half the diaphragm may be tried..

" The reason that these remedies are thought to work is that carbon dioxide build-up in the blood will stop hiccups, which is what happens when you hold your breath
Try these methods at home:

Hold your breath.
Drink a glass of water quickly.
Become frightened.
Use smelling salts.
Pull hard on your tongue.
Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of your tongue. (You can repeat this process 3 times at 2-minute intervals. Use corn syrup, not sugar, in young children.) "

A method which I read about a long while ago involves putting a paper bag over your face covering both your nose and your mouth. You should breathe with the nose and the mouth so that the exhaled air is inhaled. The carbon dioxide in the exhaled air is supposed to quieten the nervous system and thus reduce the hiccough.

I never tried that method. I used to get hiccough when I ate hot and spicy food, and I found that if you drink water, it will continue, but if you continue eating the hot food, the hiccough will eventually subside.

Drink water. Also conventional method is to keep on remembering persons you know. As soon as you recall the person who is remembering you, hiccups stop. We used to hear from our elders in our childhood and it proved to be working.
