Hi all This really is an exceptional vehicle. I get 30 mpg just under on a long haul.

I bought her 6 months ago really very cheap and I realised I would have work which I was more than prepared to do.

I done all the jobs. Now I find just two problems, a very slight streering wander( have change shocks back and front and bushes abd track ends). Some say its normally and Ford have told me its OK but I feel it should not do that.

Also fromt the fornt drivers side wheel, (she is Right hand drive) there is a rub rub rub sould which is more pronouce when at crawing speed. Again Ford have checked it and found nothing bearings are OK and it only the noise that is the problem as I have just done a 2000 miles round trip at an average of around 70 mph,

The noise at the end of the journey is no better or no worse----Any ideas please guys?

One thing more after a straight 9 hour return drive I can honestly state it was the most comfortable drive ever.

What a great vehicle.-

I own a shop, and work on these a lot. What I think is the rubbing sound, is nothing more than the brake pads touching the rotor. You probably have a rotor that needs turning, thus it has a high spot on it making the noise. As for the wandering that can be from a component such as a tie rod end worn, a idler arm worn, or the drag link worn. A ball joint can also cause this. Have the front end lubricated to see if this corrects the problem, if it does then you know you will need to look at it in the near future.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Has any one checked the tires? A bad steel belt or a flat spotted tire can cause a wonder as can mis matched tires. It could also be a little play in the steering box since it is a 1997 Vehicle. The rubbing sound can be most anything from a brake hanging up, which also could cause a wonder, to a hub bearing going bad. Have someone stand outside while you drive it slow and see if they can tell. Any decent mechanic should pin point the noise.

The rubbing sound, is probably nothing other than the steering shaft rubbing on something...you could try to have someone turn it while you listen under the dash and when you find the noise try some wd40 on it.

The steering wandering, I am assuming they did a 4 wheel alignment, because if not then thats probably the problem. The next thing I would do is have a shop check to make sure the car was never totalled, and that the frame is square. If thats not the problem you can start replacing the steering parts...tie rods, rack, ball joints....

30 mpg? what is it a diesel? I never get over 20 out of mine, it's gas. You better keep it and get it fixed, that's great mileage for that big of a vehicle

I noticed when I went to taller tires she wanders more, so stay with the lower profiles.

there is a caster/camber kit available to adjust them the next time you get a alignment
