The make of my machine is a four letter word that rhymes with 'bell'. When Windows XP became unusable, I tried to use the 'restore to original settings' feature, which should have reinstated XP from a backup area on the hard drive. It didn't work.
I spent over half an hour on the phone at premium rates running tests according to their instruction. Their conclusion was that as the fault was software, they could not offer any free support even under the maintenance agreement. They agreed to send disks. These arrived without instructions. After spending a lot of time doing the installation by guesswork, I found they had sent the instructions in an email, which I obviously could not read.
I was advised by a local shop that to do the job properly I had to reformat the hard drive and do the installation from scratch. You do need installation disks.

Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and select install new installation of Wndows XP, deleting all partitions. This will wipe your hard drive clean & give you a fresh system.
Many brands come with a Restore CD which will also reinstall all of the original application programs as well.

You cant. You can use system restore to get rid of a bad driver, for example, or something like that but the only way you can have a new, fresh xp is by reinstalling it.

Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select the date you which to restore then follow the instruction.
Before you restore, make sure there is no virus/spyware in your system.
If you did not turn on the restore feature, then you are not able to do any restore.

Its a distinctly difficult thing to do properly - if you are lucky enough to have a proper image disk from the supplier just rerun that after backing up all your personal stuff of course.
If you havent get a techie friend - a real one you can be confident in - not a pseudo expert - as reloading should be done in a certain order to get the best results. Its a lengthy process - set aside several hours to do it.

"System Restore" and if you have Windows XP,
your F10 or F11 key should be highlighted in red which you can press during start-up to begin the restore process.
