i have arrived on numerous international flights at BKK and have rarely taken more than an hour to get out of customs ...... youll then have to give yourself a whole 30 minutes to make your domestic flight. for domestics ..... you basically walk right through the airport.

Hi, checking into domestic flights in Thailand is 30 minutes before departure. So you really need not be there too early. The airlines going to Samui is Bangkok Air and Thai Airwyays. Bangkok Air is still departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport. But Thai Airways domestic may not.
As of this Sun 25 Mar, 3 domestics lines will be operate out of the former international airport in Don Muang. Just in case you want to travel on the other airlines like Nok Air, Orient Thai and Thai Airways domestic.
So cater for travel time if you need to fly on them.
Bangkok Air has very frequent flights to Samui, so you can get one with an hour even.

As a rule of thumb I always allow 2 hours for connecting flights regardless of whether they are domestic or international.
I think customs will probably process you at Bangkok so you have to keep this in mind.
