HI, you can use that remington of yours any where in the united states......certain state by state conditions apply...such as you are asking about....the quanity of shells that your gun holds to the limit that are legal in your state.....they sell what is called a plug , so you cannot load more than 3 shotgun shell..all the plug is a piece of dowel, that you drop down into the magazine tube....simple but effective...dont put that gun in the closet yet...and great hunting to you........and almost forgot...get a longer barrel or you'll have to shoot birds on your lap...

Ha. Just because of price, doesnt mean its "low end". I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 thats synthetic. A shotgun is a shotgun. The quality may be different or different accessories available for a certain model..but Rem 870 and Mossberg 500 are very popular. Some hate them, but most love them. You picked a good gun. I know a few people who use their Remington 870 for every type of hunting. Deer, turkey, rabbit/squirrel etc. TL;DR...All shotguns do the same thing. By buying a Rem 870 or Mossberg 500, you save alot of money because $1500 shotgun will do the exact same thing.

The 870 Remington is a hunting and/or police shotgun. Hunting regulations normally require a hunting shotgun to be a three-shot maximum capacity. This is done by plugging the magazine so that it will only accept two rounds in the magazine, and one in the chamber.
See about having your 870 plugged for hunting. Also, 18" length barrel is a bit short for a hunting shotgun but will work in a pinch.

I don't if you can't hunt with but it was used by my department as a riot gun.
Ducks would have to be close to hit any.
