Names for Britain?

I'm studying English. I've heard many different names for your country. How do you usually call it? Is it the UK, Britain or something different?

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or the United Kingdom or the UK or Great Britain or Britain.

A couple of people have got it right that Great Britain is only England, Wales and Scotland. Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Britain includes the countries of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. This is sometimes called Great Britain [from 18th century Greater Britain]. "British Isles" also includes Ireland [Eire].
Great Britain is most usually called The United Kingdom [England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland] - which is now shortened to UK.

Ancient names for Britain are : -

BRETEN [The original spelling in Roman times].
ALBAN [A Celtic version, sometimes Albany].

Please note that the Republic of Ireland [Eire] is a separate country from Gt.Brit. or UK but that the northern six most counties of Ireland, usually known as Ulster, form part of the UK.

The nation as a whole is known as the United Kingdom but Great Britain refers to England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. They are all countries in their own right.

The U.K includes all four amoungst others which include the channel isles etc.
