It is definitely Chavez. Chavez was a good all-around fighter who had a great generalship whilst inside the ring. He had the ablility to wear his opponents down and he could also box to an extent. If you wish, he is also able to slug it out. Gatti is just pure excitement. He fights to please. He is a whole-hearted slugger. He will not back down from a fight and is willing to trade shots with you. He'll go the knockout. He is basically "fun."
Prime to prime, I don't think Gatti can last 5 rounds against Chavez. Chavez will take you out if you attack him. That is exactly Gatti's style. Gatti will trade with Chavez and he will not get the best of it. I think Chavez knocks down Gatti several times in the fight before the referee finally stops the beating in the 5th round.

Chavez. Hands down. Gatti was an amazing fighter with a lot of heart, and a hell of a chin. But Chavez had so much skill. In his prime, Chavez proved to be unbeatable.

It's hard to imagine Gatti at any point of his career going past five rounds with Julio. Gatti the brawler would be knocked out in less than four against a in his prime Julio. Gatti the boxer would be stopped in the fifth.
The one weapon that Julio had and Gatti couldn't defend would be the left hook to the body. Arturo's three fights against "Irish" Mickey Ward was proof that Gatti did not like getting hit to the body and Julio was by far a better body puncher than Ward.
Not only did Julio posses one of the best hooks in boxing history, he also had a pretty devastating straight right hand that would land often on Gatti. Gatti would swell as he always does the Julio would land more shots and open Gatti up and then Julio would stop him.

Chavez would chew up Gatti and spit him out inside of six rounds. Unless Chavez decided to stretch the fight out and punish him exclusively to the body, as he did against Camacho, then he would take him out in ten rounds.

Chavez! Never mind about his record. He had the best Jab, hooks, was fast and smart. Plus he had amazing foot work. In his prim, he could take on and destroy anyone, including "The Golden Boy"!!!
