i have a thick, dark discharge exiting my vagina, and im too embarassed to go to the doctor because the smell is awful and my friend said to try FLAGYL but i wanna know can u get it over the counter, and what does it do exactly.
if it clears up infections, how long does it take to do so?

this is a strong antibiotic and must be prescribed by a doctor. If you don't want to go to your own doctor, go to a sexual health or GUM clinic. The symptoms you have described definitely sound like an infection of some sort, which without treatment may get worse and cause other terrible complications (eg infertility). Of course going to a doctor about something like this is embarrassing for you, but this is what doctors are trained to do and nothing will shock them. They have seen what you have described a hundred times before. You must get over your embarrassment for the sake of your health.

If you have a discharge and odor like that it is probable that you have more than an infection going on. You need to get to the doctor or your local Planned Parenthood to get STD testing done. Don't wait as if it is an STD it will not go away on it's own and waiting could cause long term adverse effects. Theres no need to be embarrassed, this is their job and they aren't there to judge you or make fun of you. They are there to help you. Good luck!
