I used to have the same problem with my cat; she would try to jump in my lap, on the seat, or onto the table, and would actually shove her head in my bowl while I ate. I finally stopped this habit by shutting her alone in a separate room for five minutes for a first attempt, and ten minutes each time if she kept trying again after she was let out. However, this would probably only work for an animal that would prefer not to be alone [she's very clingy; I always felt so guilty when she'd cry but she had to learn somehow].

The spray bottle someone else suggested could also work, though only if your dog doesn't enjoy it [some seem to feel it's a toy]. No matter what tactic you use, make sure your dog understands the correlation between his behaviour and the reprimand.

I suggest buying a crate. When you are getting ready to eat, or making dinner, put him in it. When you are done, let him out. You can enjoy your dinner and he can enjoy some quiet time. He will never stop this behaviour until you make him. I have a German shepherd dog and a Stafford shire terrier, they both have wire crates that I bought at pets-mart. they willingly go into their crates of their own accord whenever they want to sleep or just have some down time from each other. It's not a punishment and should never be used as one!

Whatever you do, do not hit your dog or tap his nose as some suggest! You are suppose to feed the dogs after you eat but try feeding your dog at the same time you are eating...might help. If that does not work, put your dog in a crate or cage during meal time. Good luck! :)

shutting your pooch in the bath is going to make your problem worse.

Why do people answer questions on this forum when they don't know the answers themselves?

DON'T JUST GUESS PEOPLE!!

Shielding doggie from a situation makes her just that much more UNABLE to deal with the situation.

You want a well trained dog. You don't want a dog you have to "put away" when company comes over or when you're trying to function at all!

Whoever said "hit him" is a complete idiot. Never hit your dog because it'll only make it worse in the long run.
Maybe when you are eating you should feed him at the same time, plus dogs are attracted to people foods anyway so he can probably smell it.

Well I would tap him on the nose and tell him "no." They will associate the pain to the "no."
I feel like that after you do this for a while that he will realize that he isnt supposed to do this.

I have two dogs, Baby a lab and "no name" (just got her) a rottweiler, german shepherd, lab mix I have disiplined them by doing this and they know now that when I say "no" I mean no.
