The gauge is the thickness of the wire. The bigger the number the thinner the wire. Standard earrings are 18 gauge. Two gauge is about a quarter inch. Most lip piercings are either 16 gauge or 18 gauge depending on preference. I have included a chart that shows the comparison between gauge and inches. My girlfriend has a 16 in her lip and and a 14 on her nipple, my tongue is 14 and my nipples are 16.

The gauge refers to the thickness of the bar, not the length or how big the hoop is. In the US, gauges start of at about 20 (the smallest size, normal earrings are usually 18) and go to 00 (about the size of a pencil eraser). After that, they go into inches.
Most piercers don't even ask what size gauge you want because they are the experts. Most people go with 14 for that piercing. When you get there, just ask your piercer what they recommend.

yea gauges are just the sizes of the widths of the rings, and the smaller the number the bigger the gauge and hole. The gauge they will initially pierce it with will be a 14 or a 16, 16 is best because it leaves less scarring.

guage means the thickness. most lip piercings are between 14-18 gauge, depending on exactly where and how you are pierced. the measurements are:
14g = 1.626mm
16g = 1.295 mm
18g = 1.041mm

Gauge means thickness or thinness of the metal. The higher the gauge, the thinner diameter (around) of the bar between the top and bottom balls of the barbell.

Usually lip piercing are done at 14g some piercers are willing to pierce you at 16g but its strongly suggested that this is not done as it can cause numerous problems. You can be pierced at a larger gauge if you wish, ask your piercer about this.
In relation to 14g, 12g would be larger, 16g would be smaller.

Just wanted to say first that i agree with 14ga being the standard piercing gauge, but the 16ga is the equivalent to normal earrings, 18ga is not usually carried by piercing studios.
go with the 14ga maybe get your labret pierced instead,but make sure you go to a professional studio.
