Those who successfully become KATSUs hold the same rank that they would if they were serving in the Korean Army, but there are advantages to serving in a unit of the United States Army.

To me, the 'that' sounds wrong. Unlike some of your other answerers, I don't think you can just drop it completely. There needs to be something there. I would replace it with 'as'.

'The same rank as that which they would have if they were serving...' is probably grammatically more correct, but very wordy. I'd just change the 'that' to 'as'.

I would modify it as follows:

Those who successfully become KATSUs hold the same rank that they would have held if they were serving in the Korean Army, but there are advantages to serving in an unit of the United States Army.

Yes it is fine.

By the way I disagree with the top contributor's comment. You could use other tenses (e.g. if they had been serving) but the meaning would be different, and his proposed wording does not work: it should be 'that they would have held if they had been serving'.

What is KATSU?

It sounds fine but I personally would take the 'that' out after rank. One person has put 'an unit' - this is not right!!

Go with what you have, these others will have you spinning like a top. the only difference I would suggest is, if you drop the first "That". Best of luck in your service as a spy for the Russians!
