Our neighbours are coming over this weekend to visit. I need help choosing which wine to serve with cheese and crackers, and possibly other munchies as yet undecided. Last time they came over, they brought Wyndham Bin 555, so I wanted to pick something equally fruit forward and easy drinking, but Canadian. I've narrowed it down to:

-Quail's Gate Old Vines Foch Limited Release 2002
-Burrowing Owl Merlot 2002
-Sandhill Cabernet Franc 2002
-Sumac Ridge Meritage 2002

Thanks for your suggestions!

Okay, people. I already have these wines in my cellar. I just need a recommendation from the list. I am not buying new wine for this event. Thanks!

Hi there.
I often use a Marchel Foch for poaching pears because I have not found one I like enough to drink. Having said that I have not tried the Quail's Gate version. I did check on Gismondi's site and he rates it an 88 but warns of gamey foch notes (maybe that's what I don't like).
Cab Franc can be a little tannic but after 5 yrs should be okay. Sandhill has long ago reached cult status and IMO has not improved as much in recent history as other BC wineries. A large fan base can be a inhibition to improvements.
Personally I would go with the Sumac Ridge Meritage. However, vintage charts state 2002 as a stellar year for BC merlots (and pinot).

Totally changed my call I checked the burrowing owl merlot on gismondi's site Rated a 90 in 2004. Adding some of his tasting notes.

90/100 Burrowing Owl Merlot 2002
Good dark cherry colour. Still a baby the ’02 merlot shows fine promise from its peppery, spicy, Christmas pudding and plum/iodine nose with black raspberry, earthy, tobacco leaf undercurrent to its ripe plum jam, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, peppery orange rind flavours. Rich round and quite concentrated with ripe, supple tannins. A bit fat and alcoholic for B.C. but it will have wide appeal. Should improve over the next two to four years. Dare we say St. Emilion...

(CAN I HAVE IT. I love emilion juice)

Both the Quail's Gate and the Cab Franc from Sandhill are good choices. I'd save the Burrowing Owl and Sumac Ridge for an actual dinner.

Try Two Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's . . . better than any from your list . . . and cheaper, too.
