Shiva is called ‘Bhootnath’, literally the Lord of the Ghosts or past. The so-called scientific study today is incomplete as it restricts itself to the material aspect while overlooking the ‘spiritual’ or related to a kind of energy expressed as soul, although many persons related with para-science are engaged in the study even in the present because apparitions have apparently been seen by many and there are many stories related with true stories on ghosts. But, their studies are still at a rudimentary stage. They apparently still require lot of time to reach the apparent advanced stage, which the ancient Hindus (Tantriks) appear to have reached by ‘searching inwards’ within their body.

Shiva's wearing of serpents around the neck denotes wisdom and eternity. Serpents live for a large number of years. He is Trilochana, the three-eyed One, in the centre of whose forehead is the third eye, the eye of wisdom.

Generally serpents live for hundreds of years. Wearing of serpents by Lord Siva signifies that He is Eternal. He wears five serpents as ornaments. He wears five serpents as ornaments. He wears a garland of skulls. He is pressing with His feet the demon Muyalaka, a dwarf holding a cobra. He faces south. Panchakshari itself is His body. Lord Siva says: “Control the five senses which are hissing like serpents-

I've never heard BhootNath, but I have heard Shiva referred to as Bholenath, which means "the innocent god."

Shiva is also known as the king of snakes, which is why you see him with a serpent around his neck.

Shiva is the source of fertility for all living things, and the snake is seen in India as a symbol of fertility.

This is a very sacred question which shows the importance of Tapasya and meditation(Dyan) even for Shiva and Vishnu. Did you ever read about BhrigaKeeta Nyaya. When a Bhringa takes an insect inside its hole,it comes out having become a Bhringa because he keeps thinking about Bhringa and becomes like him. In the same way, lord Shiva worships and thinks of lord Vishnu in his Tapasya that is why he has got the SttvaGuna of lord Vishnu and lord Vishnu worships and thinks of lord Shiva and gets the Tamoguna of lord Shiva. This is how Shiv has become Vishnu and Vishnu has become Shiva. This shows the eternal Bhakti, love and CONNECTION between Shiva and Vishnu, there is no difference between them and also the importance of Tapasya that can enable even a man to become a power like Shiva and Vishnu.

Lord Shiva is so merciful that those living entities that are in the lowest mode of igonorance or darkness get a chance to associate with him. Lord Shiva is in charge of the mode of goodness, Brahma of passion and Vishnu of Goodness.

The bhuta (ghost) don't get a gross body (made up panch bhuta, viz., earth, water, fire, air, ether) but are in a subtle body made up of mind, intelligence and false ego. Since they want to enjoy and don't get to enjoy the objects of sight, touch, smell etc., they try to possess and enter some other bodies and create disturbances.

Lord Shiva is so compassionate that these lowly creatures in the mateirla mode of ignorance (tamo guna) get to associate with him and get purified due to his purity and ultimately get liberated.

His form of panchmahabhooth is so emerging that even spirits and ghosts fear from it.
