I know it takes 18 to 20 days for a pigeon egg to hatch but I do have a major concern. When egg starts hatching IF the chick has a hard time getting out should I help it or let him(or her) figure it out?

Well Mate, first of all...once your baby is on the way, be patient. It can take many hours for a bird to hatch. It's difficult to give adequate instructions this way, but the main thing is, go slow. There are blood vessels in the membrane around the chick. The membrane MUST be dry or interference can cause the chick to bleed out. Remove small bits of the shell and membrane at a time, and stop immediately if any bleeding occurs. Remove a little bit, and then give the chick a rest. Watch it's progress, you might only need to remove a small bit and then the chick does the rest. You must continue to keep the chick and egg warm during the process. What has worked for me is keeping the chick/egg on the heat pad while I work. Once hatched, the chick wont need feeding for at least 24 hours. My rule of thumb is wait til the second poop and then begin feeding. I think you are going to be very well prepared for your baby, but don't go looking for trouble! Most of the time the chick should be able to do it itself.

NO! Do not help your little guy out of the shell. Birds gain strength during the hatching process; if you "help" him out of his shell, your pigeon will be weak and possibly not survive. Resist the temptation to help and let nature take its course.
