Because Amazon IS the on-line bookstore. They got their name out there doing just that and even thou now they sell all kind of other stuffs, people will always remember them first as a bookstore. They just simply become the on-line book store that you can pick up clothes and toys while your at it. That pattern repeat a lot in other company, Coca cola is the soda company, but also sell water, energy drink, etc. Pepsi sell juice also. Starbucks is starting to sell music CD under their own music label. Apple is a computer company but they have over 80% of the music download market with itune. A successful company need to know what their identity is before they could grow into other area. Otherwise the consumer can't trust it. And that was largely credited due to the right marketing.

It is because Amazon.com was originally a book store and because Borders and Barnes and Noble both have partnerships with Amazon.

Your Question is specific to "books" success. Amazon Knows where the profit is. And they concentrate their efforts/marketing/resources on that. The above answers both have great elements as well.

The books are cheap, you can preview the books before you buy them, and Amazon.com has teamed up with Borders.
