First let me just say that I'm not trying to brag. I honestly want to know if you think my 3 year (and 4 months) old daughter is smart. I have nothing to base it on, such as other children ...

She's very independent and does lots of stuff on her own like, brushing teeth, washing face & hands, dressing herself, putting shoes on. She's completely potty-trained.

She can write her name, count to 25 (and 10 in Spanish from Dora and Sesame Street), sing her ABCs, she knows her colors. She speaks in complete sentences. She knows several (kids) songs. She can draw a square, rectangle, circle, oval, triangle and heart.

And she listens to EVERYTHING! I was talking to my mom about a week ago and asked her how my niece was who had strep throat. And today, my daughter asked me if Sandra could come over and I said "no, not rght now" (because she was at dance class). And she asked if it was because she had strep throat.

Is this stuff normal for a 3 1/2 old? I just don't know. Thanks!

No, she's not in prescool or day care.

Thank you for all of the nice & helpful answers. I was fully prepared to get bashed and accused of trying to brag.

I remember at 3 my son was asking me questions of how the earth moved around the sun. He could take apart anything mechanical and rebuild it. He also had down his shapes, colors, etc. By the time he reached grade 1 he had problems...reading. He could memorize a book and repeat it back to you but couldnt actually read.

What is normal for a 3 year old? A 6 old? A 30 year old?

All this says is you are a caring, patient parent that has provided your daughter with great structure. Its wonderful for you and her.

I do know children that were reading at 3 years old and yet still became high school drop outs.

The test comes when your child has graduated high school and has become a self-sufficent adult that is happy within themselves.

She sounds pretty clever!! Three is a funny age - some three year olds still seem like toddlers while others are way up at the level your daughter is - there's a massive range of abilities. You should be very proud - it's obvious you spend real quality time with her, which is something I think a lot of kids lack. Some of the children in our Preschool class would be able to do the things your daughter is doing, but the majority wouldn't. Congratulations!

I have a four year old and she can do the stuff like washing dressing shoes and potty trained but not writing her name yet or drawing rectangles and things. I'd say she is advanced for her age just because you dont see many children being able to do some of those things at that age. Brag all you want!!!
I do it

She has a higher intelligence than normal 3year olds. I bet she in day care or some sort of preschool. I know (not a lot) but a few 2-3 years olds who know a lot. You should keep encouraging her to learn more and more start teaching her how to add and subtract small numbers 1-10.

I'd brag if I were you! My sister's son turned 3 last October and he can speak in full sentences too but you can't understand a single word he says. And half the time he just grunts.

It is great that she is that way, however, it is not uncommon for children her age to be like that.. it all depends on who they are around and what they pick up on..... I know a few kids her age who are the same... Congrats either way though...

I think your daughter sounds very smart! It is very good that you help her and encourage her! there are many kids these days that don't have that, and they are not that smart yet! Just wait untill your girl hits preschool!

She's pretty smart, but not a genius.
I was like that at her age, and my adult IQ's about 150.
