Lots of icons hidden in the computer.
In the system 32 folder there is a file called moreicons.dll
There is also one called pifmgr.dll
This is in addition to the shell32.dll
If you go on the web and find icons you like, just put them in any folder you like, I created one called Icons, and they will be available for any folder you can assign an icon to.

Yea...it's a little more involved than that...you see the Icon Cache is actually called the shell32.dll and is located in the System32 folder...you can't just open it and add icons to it...not that simple and I'm not sure of how you would do that since I'm not a programmer.
The other option is much simpler...Rightclick the folder you want to change the image of, choose properties, then customize, then browse to and icon image or picture, you'd like to use for it, then click OK, then Apply.

if you open the control panel, click on classic view(i can never find anything in category view) and click on folder options.
click file types, its the tab at the top, select whichever icon you would like to change, then click advanced. in the new window, click on change and the other icon styles will be there for you to choose from.
an easier way where you can change all icons at once is to use an outside program, personally i like style xp, you can change the themes, icons sets, boot screens, as well as make your menus transparent.

You don;t have to put them anyplace special. Just get new icons (files that end with the .ico suffix) and put them anywhere. Then right click on the shortcut of the folder you want to change and select "change icon". Then click browse and find the .ico file you want to use.
