I have a 20d and I was thinking about the loss of $$ that can occur with older model digital camera's
How long is too long to hold on to such and item?

very little we can do to fight off technological advancement. if you were a pro fotographer, you may have an economical solution for your question. But as a serious hobbyist, it all depends on your disposable income.

Well, the megapixel race is over. Now its the cleaning engine/firmware in each camera that has received most of the improvement. Your 20D is a fine camera and can easily last 5 years.

But more importantly is that you invest in good lenses. In your case, the "L" lenses of Canon are superb and would easily outlive the camera. Invest in lenses more than the camera.

If you're a professional...you know how to get what you need w/what you have. And everything's so easy w/digital cameras today - too easy. Upgrade only as needed. Most alterations can be made via computer.

Hold on to anything as long as it has usefulness - if saving money is your aim.
