First of all, are you sure that you really want to have red hair? And if so, what shade? There are many variations, and if you're going to do this, you want to find the shade that is most flattering to your skin and eye coloring.
If you can afford it, go to a good hair salon and have your hair done, but make certain to get the price in advance. With hair as long as yours is, it will be pricey. They can also help you in determining the shade that will be most becoming to you.
If you can't afford to go to a salon, find a good friend who has some experience in coloring hair to help you out. Purchase a good brand of hair color, and get the temporary, not the permanent. (You will need more than one box for your long hair.) Don't try to cut corners. Follow the instructions exactly, including the strand test to check for allergic reaction. Remember to protect your clothes and other surfaces; the hair dye will ruin any fabric it touches and can also stain other surfaces.
If you check the box or the instructions inside, most hair colors have an 800 phone number that you can call for advice or answers to questions. And remember, once you do this, you either have to keep up with it or go through a period of letting it grow out, so give it plenty of thought.
Good luck. Have fun.

Go to the salon and get lots of red highlights, it will look pretty. Pay for the best stylist at the best salon - so you don't have regrets. If your hair is that long, you don't want mistakes. Get the color consultation first and bring in pics of the look you want to achieve. I did all that and my hair turned out beautiful, but I'm dark brunette with golden highlights - it turned out very natural. :)

You will need to bleach your hair first. It's not hard to do but the bleach will turn your hair yellow so as to make your hair red. But the red will not stay as it is not nature colour and it will soon turn back to yellowish brown after 1 month. Since you got long hair, you might want to consider going to a salon to do it since it is going to be quite difficult for you to DIY.

I am so glad you asked this question. I have dark brown hair as well (although almost everyone i meet thinks it is black.) I was planning to dye my hair auburn too. I have been thinking of how to go about dying it, but i cannot think of how. It would be so great if you could tell me what the answer you get for this question is. thanks much

Seeing it's your first time at colouring your hair, I suggest you go to a hair dresser for professional help. Take a sample of the colour you would like to go,eg a picture, with you, so you don't end up with something you are unhappy with. Good Luck.

Okay.... as a lisenced stylist, I will not suggest you do this yourself especially if your hair is down to your waist. Try going to a salon to someone who specializes in color and they will be happy to assist you .
