The brain and nervous system, kidneys, and red blood cells need about 130 to 150 grams per day to function properly. If you take much less than that, you can get hypoglycemia. Also, because the kidneys need carbs, and the diet produces more uric acid for them to process, it is hard on the kidneys. Most weight loss is from lost muscle and water. Any real fat loss is because cutting out carbs is simply cutting calories.

Here is some more info on low carb diets.

My doctor advised me that to lose weight steadily, and without doing anything drastic, I should try to consistantly follow a low carb diet in which carbs (in the form of fruits, veggies, and whole grains) accounted for 30% of my total daily calorie intake, 50% should be protein, and the remaining 20% fat. When I started doing this, the weight dropped fast. I lost 45 lbs in 3 months!
The percentages might be different for you, so you should probably consult a doctor to see what your ideal breakdown should be.
I was totally clueless at first as to how I was supposed to know where my calories are coming from, but there are websites out there that can help you track how you're getting your calories. The best one I found was fitday.com. Good luck!

you don't want to go under 10 carbs a day and that is really way to low,but I jump start myself that way. You get a little light headed going that low. 30 to 40 carbs a day is low but if you plan it right you can eat a lot of food for that many carbs. Do your carb home work.

I know that eating a 8 Ounces of pasta + slice of bread is enough for carbs. For those who want to lose weight of course.

The best way to figure out carbs, is to only eat ones made by nature itself (i.e. fruits, veggies, and whole grains) and avoid those that are pocessed (i.e. white breads, pastas, and rices-also avoid potatos and corn as they have alot of starch). For more info, check out the Zone diet, this has worked for me in the past, and I am following it somewhat presently.
