I have a friend from the Phillipines who wants to join the US military, but does not have a green card. What advice should I give my friend? If a green card is required, what options are available for someone with no college degree? Marrying an American can't be the only option.

I think you need to be a citizen or be in the process of being approved to be one before you can join any U.S. military branch. Your friend could marry a U.S. citizen, get petitioned then join the service of his choosing.

Good Luck

Get the Green Card. that is the only way they can enlist now. The program where Filipino Nationals could serve in the US military without one has been discontinued for many years.

It used to be that filipinos could join the service without being a citizen. It was in thanks from the U.S. for the filipinos service in WWII against the Japanese. After Subic and Clark AFB closed we stopped that tradition. The only way your friend can join the U.S. military now is to become a U.S. citizen.

Your friend first needs to become a US Citizen. Once your friend has his or her green card (this can take a while just fyI, NOR is it cheap). He or she then needs to do some research on which branch he or she wants to join. Each branch offers different things. Once your friend makes his or her decision, he or she then needs to take all of his or her paperwork to the recruiter for that branch and if he or she meets all the requirements for that branch and sign up. :-)

Good luck!

Go to the embassy. There's lots of Filipinos who join to help get their citizenship.
