As far as I know, some places like Zimbabwe follow this logic and made it policy.

Besides - they have a debt to society.

And don't generalize. Do people in a supermax ever get out "in the yard"?

because.... think of all the dirt and grime on the floor in there. They would have to pay more for medical costs.

Constitutionally, each prisoner has a right against cruel and unusual punishment. Denying prisoners the right to footwear is a violation of that right. Having seen a few prisons, there is a need for shoes as they are not as clean as a hospital. Also, the cost of cheap sneakers is a great deal less expensive than foot care health costs from 1 infection.
In response to earlier responses, there is a requirement that ALL prisoners get exercise for 1 hour a day in the Yard, even super-max solitary confinement prisoners. Therefore, shoes are probably a good idea as most prisons are not located in the best locations.

What do you think they do all day? lay back on their bunks? No, they work in workshops and kitchens just like other people. They get out for recreation periods, to go to education, to see their lawyers.
And whatever they have done they are still human beings and should be treated with dignity.

Please, don't use the words Zimbabwe and Logic in the same sentence.
Some prisoners are in jail for non-violent drug offenses, can they have some dignity and wear shoes?

Let's just chop off their feet, so that the whole "shoes" thing becomes a moot point.

because its unsanitary not to wear them and if they couldnt its considered crewl and unusual punishment and the prisoners could sue the prison and so they dont stub there toes

To reduce the amount of medical attention (and hence the costs) required if they were barefoot.
