The Great Apostasy is real, and that is falling away of the Church, it is spoken of in Acts. This is when Churches, especially Christ centered churches, start to move away from the Bible, it is only going to get worse in the coming years. This is the emerging church, and there are many Pastors at the pulpit preaching that we do not need to go to the Bible for teachings, and that is a very bad thing. "disfellowshiiping" is when we deny the works of the Holy Spirit, and again many people believe that the holy Spirit is not working anymore. Unless the Church is teaching right out of the Bible, then steer away from that Church. Read the book of Acts, it speels out what will take place in the Churches when the and where the Great Apostasy will happen.

It says in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-11 Let no one seduce you in any manner, because it will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed, the son of destruction. He is set in oposition and lifts himself over everyone who is called "god" or an object of reverence, so that he sits down in the temple of The God, publicly showing himself to be a god. Do you not remember that while I was yet with you, I use to tell you these things? And so now you know the thing that acts as a restraint, with a view to his being revealed in his own due time. True, the mystery of this lawlessness is already at work; but only till he who is right now acting as a restraint gets to be out of the way. Then, indeed, the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will do away with the spirit of his mouth and bring to nothing by the manifestation of his presence. But the lawless one's presence is according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying signs and portents and with every unrighteous deception for those who are perishing, as a retribution because they did not accept the love of the truth that they might be saved. So that is why God lets an operation of error go to them, that they may get to believing the lie, in order that they all may be judged because they did not believe the truth but took pleasure in unrighteouness. Only a few disfellowship according to the Scriptures, Jehovah's Witnesses do because it is a protection, as outlined in the Bible, for the whole congregation. The churches now-a-days are tolerant of wrong doing so as to get paying members, they must keep up appearances you now,and their lavish life styles. The apostasy started after the Apostles died at the end of the first century until, as it says in the book of Daniel, that in the last days true worship would be re-established. So all churches that rose up during the apostasy would be apostate and any churches that continue their teaching woud be apostate as well.

2 Timothy 4: 1-5...The apostle Paul here, under inspiration is telling of what will happen, and how easily people will accept false teachings because of their own desires...
" I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is destined to judge the living and the dead, and by his manifestation and his kingdom, 2Â preach the word, be at it urgently in favorable season, in troublesome season, reprove, reprimand, exhort, with all long-suffering and [art of] teaching. 3Â For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; 4Â and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. 5Â You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do [the] work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry"
2 Corinthians 11: 13 & 14: "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14Â And no wonder, for Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. 15Â It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness. But their end shall be according to their works."
We find that it is vital to the protection of the congregation that ones who are disobedient and begin to try and teach anything other than the truth, or who turn from applying God's standards as set forth in the Bible to their lives be disfellowshipped, but there is a process that one goes through, because it is a very serious step, and first everything is done to try and correct the situation for the good of the individual and the congregation.
2 Peter 2: 1-3: "However, there also came to be false prophets among the people, as there will also be false teachers among YOU. These very ones will quietly bring in destructive sects and will disown even the owner that bought them, bringing speedy destruction upon themselves. 2Â Furthermore, many will follow their acts of loose conduct, and on account of these the way of the truth will be spoken of abusively. 3Â Also, with covetousness they will exploit YOU with counterfeit words. But as for them, the judgment from of old is not moving slowly, and the destruction of them is not slumbering."
