This week my daughter was put on risperdal for psychosis, after a short visit with two psychiatrists. What concerned me right away was that she had only talked to them for about thirty minutes before they decided to put her on the medication. I've decided that they are professionals, and know what they're doing, but they seemed awfully quick to give it to her. Is this normal?

thirty minutes from two psychiatrists is enough time to start treatment. the only way a doctor prescribes treatment, is based on the information that a patient offers. there are no blood tests, or any test for mental illness, that is why they have to rely on a patients honesty and their complaints. a psychosis is a serious symptom, and usually there is no other treatment , except medication. see if you daughter improves. the medication usu sally will alleviate the psychosis, and the symptoms. it may be help full if you had a diagnosis, and then u could educate yourself, if she has a mental disorder. i worked with a lot of psychiatrists in my job, and usually they do a pretty good job, but it is not an exact science, and it may take some trial and error. educate yourself and your daughter about the medications, and ask the pharmacists to give you information, about the medication. you may want to sit in on future appointments also. hope this helps good luck to you and your daughter.

As a mother go with your gut feeling. Do you think your daughter is unwell, is her behaviour innappropriate and erratic. Is she showing signs of regressive behaviour experiencing any hallucinations or delusions these are a few signs that all is not well,as a mum I would want the best care for my child if she was unwell and would question the treatment if I had doubts. I know some people are against psychiatry but if you had a broken arm you would go to the drs and get it fixed so why so different if it is a mental condition. Sometimes there are conditions that can't be fixed without medication. Is it possible for you to be with her on one of her visits and then you could voice your concerns and get some answers.

I'm a pharmacist, and truely i disagree with most doctors when it comes to medications, it's almost scary to the point where i demand the medications i know i need when i go to them...after all i did six years of studies on medications and they did about one.... However, if you took your child to a phsychiatrist, there was a reason. See how the medication works for her! Watch for weight gain, this is emmenent so watch her diet and keep her moving. She will seem sluggish this is normal and most effects are limiting which means they tend to stop over time (about 2-3 weeks) good luck with her and do have faith in board certified specialists. they're the good guys...

no longer in basic terms are they too speedy to prescribe drugs for psychological ailment they're too speedy to diagnose psychological ailment. Psychiatry is an underpaid forte and hence there's a intense affected person to physician ratio. This has deliver approximately the practice being little better than a speedy communicate approximately drugs accompanied by ability of a prescription for greater drugs. Diagnoses constantly contain a fallible, subjective element and now and returned the drugs prescribed do greater harm than good. sufferers would desire to hold the splendid to think of for themselves. Psychiatrists are no longer cult leaders who've assumed the splendid to think of and make your judgements for you.

Noooooooooo, they usually don't know what they are doing. They are basically running blind, truly. It's a guessing game they are playing. Everyone here will say the same thing. As somebody already said. Do loads of research. These drugs, antipsychotics, are heavy duty drugs and could very well turn her into an obese zombie !!! That's what they did to me!! They put me on Xyprexia to start with and I doubled my weight in 2 months.............. got to about 110 kilos before I saw through the fog and pulled the plug on it !! After that I felt a bit like a guinea pig and it took them about 4 - 5 more times to get it right. In hindsight, I should have done my research more thoroughly and gotten another opinion. There is no cure for mental illness, hence they really are just guessing as to the correct remedy for you daughter ............ :0)

P.S. I was diagnosed with bipolar/schizophrenia...... :0)

i don't know how old your daughter is but maybe you should leave it up to her if you have confidence in her. when i had mental problems i was willing to take just about anything just to give my mind a rest. consider her condition can she function ok without the meds? ask her do you want to try any meds or will you be ok the way you are? what are your feeling about your doctor? weigh out the risks and benefits of the meds and try to decide whats best, like the others said research it

Normal, yes. Right, no. Don't trust them because they got a degree. Psychiatric doctors are all a bunch of quacks who spend time messing around with the brain, which is still a huge mystery. They do more harm than good, and they write scripts because they get paid to do it, not because they know it will work.

30 minutes is an eternity in the psychiatric world. I've had meds changed by doctors who were writing the scrip before we even said hello.
