if you put a regular light bulb and a fluorescent light bulb to the WATT test, you will see that a regular light bulb uses more electricity than a fluorescent light bulb.

Two advantages: first, they cost less in the long run. The bulbs are more expensive, but more than pay for themselves in the long run.
2) By saving energy, they potentially reduce the need for using fossil fuels (coal) to produce power, thus cutting pollution and greenhouse gases. Esiimates are that the energy saved in the US from a complete shift to these bulbs will be the equivalent of 50--75 coal burining powerplants

I have a new package of CFLs,
called energy smart 60, they use 75% less energy and last 8 - 10 times longer than the incandescent bulbs they replace.
They have a life of 8000 hours and should last 5 years.
A 13 watt CFL will produce same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb and fit in the same sockets.
1 CFL (compact fluorescent lightbulb) lasts as long as 8 incandescent bulbs.
Small compact size
Soft pleasing light
Electronic flicker free starting
If you change eight 60 watt incandescent light bulbs to 13 watt Energy Star qualified CFLs, over the bulbs' lifetime, you would save:
the energy to run an Energy Star qualified commercial refrigerator for over 15 months.
enough energy to operate 8 Energy Star qualified computers for 1 year.
an amount of energy equivalent to burning a ton of coal

This is not advatage but you need to know.
Many energy-efficient lamps used for indoor and outdoor lighting contain mercury, a potent neurotoxin that is responsible for fish consumption advisories in 45 states. All fluorescent, compact fluorescent, low-pressure sodium, and metal halide lamps contain mercury. Facilities can improve energy efficiency and reduce mercury consumption by purchasing and installing energy-efficient lamps with the lowest mercury amount.

The only advantage is that you might save a penny or two. Other than that, its just a bunch of hype directed towards weak minded people.
