I've never been out of the country before and it would be easier to fly from Italy to Spain rather than try and take the rail between the two, but I have no idea how to find out if that is even possible with just a U.S. passport. Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

yes, you can.

I'm italian/european and I know for sure that US citizen can move every were in the EU with a passports on short-term visit (less than 90 days).
There is no custom to walk trough at the airport too. But if you end up on an international flight you will encounter a custom with 2 lines one for EU citizen and the other one for non EU citizen. You just show your american passport and say that you are a tourist if someone ask you anything.

Yes, all countries in the EU will accept the US Passport (as long as you are not staying over 90 days) . In previous Eastern Bloc countries, you do not need a visa anymore. When I transversed around Central Europe for 6 weeks my passport was all I needed---London then flew to Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland then Scotland.

Hi, well you can travel to Europe with only a valid US passport if you are going to stay for less than 90 days. If you are going to stay longer you will need a visa. I don't know how long you plan on staying in Spain and Italy, but if it's less than 90 days you'll be okay with only a US passport.

I'm American, but live in Italy.

Are you a Mexican citizen or are you purely departing from Mexico? while you're a Mexican national, or a long-lasting resident, then you certainly would prefer a visa. the US State branch internet site states: "electorate and everlasting citizens of Mexico many times could have a nonimmigrant visa or Border Crossing Card (additionally prevalent as a "Laser Visa"). The Border Crossing Card, type DSP-a hundred and fifty is a biometric, gadget readable card this is a mixed customer B1-B2 visa/Border Crossing Card." the reality which you're connecting shouldn't count. US airports have not got transit lounges like those in many different worldwide places, so there is not any separation of connecting and arriving passengers. All travellers arriving on worldwide flights are required to sparkling customs and immigration, regardless of no count if or no longer they are staying or connecting. Many distant places electorate attempt to stay away from making connections in the US subsequently. I recommend contacting the US Embassy in Mexico or the closest consulate to substantiate the standards. do no longer count on solutions in this internet site. in the event that they are incorrect, then you certainly would be denied boarding or deported. Why danger your holiday?
