Several members, young and old, of my family were morbidly obese and had the weight loss surgery. So judging by their experience after losing a large amount of weight there is nothing that really tightens skin except for surgery. Stretched skin just loses its elasticity.

your skin will be ok if you dont drop all the weight fast, eat healthy and excercise.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats and it will tell you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. take 300-400calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones.
5-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
8 glasses of water a day.
4-6 times a week cardio work out for 30-50min plus light weight training.
no junk food, no sodas, no white flour (white bread, pasta, cookies, cakes etc)

You just asked about your weight loss and excess skin. It depends on how far it has been stretched and for how long. You used to weight 279, right? That's morbidly obese. Chances are VERY high that you will have a lot of hanging skin.

I just answered your other question. I'm 38, and have been overweight since i was a kid. I was up to about 324, now I'm at 222. It kind of goes in stages, I would lose weight, then my skin would sag, but then it tightens up. I really doubt that you have anything to worry about.

Lose it healthfully and exercise. This way as you lose weight you build muscle and tone. You should be fine. 40 lbs doesn't cause your skin to stretch too much.

Yes. Sure your skin will go back to shape. But you need to drink a lot of water and do a lot of exercises.
