A solder guarded the tomb. No one was to enter the tomb. The Jewish leaders feared what might ensue if someone could enter the tomb and steal the body. Everyone was surprised when the body was gone, and when the resurrected body walked through walls. But this does not explain why Mary Magdalene and her friends sought to annoint the body if they had already seen that a huge stone sealed the tomb. And it hardly seems custom for a human to open a sealed tomb after three days, in those days. (Of course, some of us, as I myself, believe that Christ resurrected, but I am not speaking of this. WHY did Mary Magdalene come to annoint a 3-days old dead body?)

Without going in to the Bible to find the specific passages that address this question I would say that in all likelihood, she thought that the stone could be rolled away by someone so she could complete the ministrations to the body. After all, men rolled it in to place so men could roll it away again...yes? It was for that reason that a guard was left at the tomb...to prevent anyone from rolling away the stone again and stealing the body in an attempt to make it appear the Jesus was resurrected.

Because the normal preparations had not been completed... The body had been placed in the tomb very late Friday and the Sabbath "rules" did not allow the preparation to be done on Saturday. The time since his death that she was going to the tomb was around 36 hours, not 3 FULL days, but part of Friday, all day Saturday, and part of Sunday.

... The first answer here is NOT as negative as some seem to be thinking. Tombs in the 1st century were used for large numbers of people. There would be several places where individual bodies could be laid out to decompose for about a year. The PURPOSE of the anointing WAS to deodorize or at least mask the odor of the bodies, allowing others to be placed in the tomb.

The stones used to seal the tomb were actually on a small track groooved into the ground and could actually be rolled away by the soldiers. Anointing the body was part of the burial rites used by Hebrew people at the time.

You're mistaken on the series of events. Scripture states that they went as followed :

" And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a councellor, and he was a good man; and just : he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews; who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never a man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandments. Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of Jesus. "

Luke 23: 50-56, Luke 24: 1-3.

They prepared the spices on the night of His death. They could not do anything the following day because it was unlawful to do so on the Sabbath. On Sunday morning, they came to prepare His body, but He was gone.

The Romans would have allowed the Jews to prepare the body for burial. Pilate, as was many other governing officials, were aware of Jewish burial customs. There was only one day laspe, due to the Sabbath. Friday He was crucified and removed from the cross by Joseph. He was laid to rest in the tomb. Saturday was the Sabbath. Sunday morning, He had risen from the dead.

This is an interesting question. It's a pity that you only get sarcastic and protective answers. Honestly, it does not make sense to me that she could have gone there to annoint te body. She knew well that a soldier was uarding the tomb. There's no hint, let alone proof, that the soldier would have allowed her in, especially that early hours of the morning. He would have thought of a possibility of some men followers of Jesus layig around the corner to jump in.

I think that passage is one of those manufactured to make the ressurection story plausible!

I'll make research, maybe some people found out why - if in deed it happened!

What exactly does the Bible say about this? If Mary Magdalene went to annoint the body, then she must have thought that it was available to do so. She obviously had no inclination that the stone to the tomb had already been put in place. Please furnish scripture to back your question so people can research and try to find answers to give you the information or interpretation you are inquiring about.

Jesus body had to be buried in a hurry since there was a religious ceremony coming up (the Passover) there would not have been time to properly inter the body. Anointing the body was a way of honoring the dead. The three women wanted to make sure the body was put to rest properly.

His body needed to be prepared. It makes sense that if the solders were there to guard the tomb, it was because it could be opened.

Mary Magdalene loved Jesus.
He saved her in John 8. If you believe the story. The fact that Jesus had saved her, and the fact that she was repentant and had faith in him made it a natural thing that after his death she would seek him out.
Jesus himself tells of her and approves in Matthew 26:11-13.

Someone already said it; It's in Mark 16:3 They didn't know if anyone would roll the stone for them.
