A "Mormon" is a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there are also off-shoots of the LDS church - like RLDS, FLDS, and some people also call them "mormons" but they should not be confused with LDS members because their beliefs differ...
Anyways, I am not sure how the religion sounds like a scam... Jo actually has it pretty close to right. We believe we pre-existed as spirit children of Heavenly Father (and Mother), we chose to come to earth to gain a body, have mortal experiences, learn, grow, die, and eventually have the chance to become like our Heavenly Father. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Only Begotten in the flesh, and that Christ came to earth to fulfill all law and redeem mankind from death and sin. We believe the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and we learn from it, the bible, the D&C, the Pearl of Great Price and any other spiritually uplifting books. We believe after Christ died and all His apostles died also, that the true gospel, along with the Priesthood, was lost from the earth. We believe the true gospel was restored to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith by the power of Almighty God. We are just normal people trying to live the gospel.
If you truly want to know more, contact your local LDS missionaries, go to mormon.org, LDS.org or email me and i would be glad to answer any questions you have.

A belief system that has it's roots in a man that used to speak to rocks in a hat and was arrested for finding water and treasure using twigs for money before becoming a messenger of god.

Then the prophecies came from looking at the rocks in the hat from behind a curtain. Then there was this issue of some tablets that were supposed to prove the existance of Hebraic tribes in ancient times on American soil that were sent to a linguist who determined them to be fakes and then the early movement used the persons name in the newspaper to say they were authenticated until the man started legal procdings.

I am not intending to offend anyone who is mormon and to be honest I know little of what they practice now, but I do know quite a bit about the roots and it is quite strange at it's inception. I suppose it may be quite different than what it started like originally.

There is also a huge racist period at least into the early 70's in the movement as a whole, but that has to be looked at in light of the fact they were persecuted a few times in different places throughout the country also.

You should visit
http://www.mormon.org

The site was designed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to show non-Mormons what we believe and why.

While Lds.org is a great site for members, it can be confusing to non-members, as it's designed for those that know exactly what they're looking for.

I am proud to be a Mormon, to be more specific I am a Latter-Day Saint.

If you wish to know more about our religion you should investigate it. Go to one of our Wards, read the Book of Mormon and speak to a few missionaries.

They believe that if you follow their religion and protocols you will become a God or Goddess after you die. Some include
1. being a virgin when you marry
2. have to be married in the temple
3. baptized

and I don't know what else

oh, and black people are descended from Cain and are cursed but some time in the 70's they kind of changed the rules about what they can be involved in the church, but I think they still believe they are cursed.

There is so much information, hope you will check out the link below.

Mormonism in a Nutshell

Mormonism teaches that God used to be a man on another world and that he became a god by following the laws and ordinances of his god on his home world. He brought his wife to this world, a woman he had married on the other world. She is, essentially a goddess.
In his present god-state, he rules our world. He has a body of flesh and bones. Since god and his wife are both exalted persons, they each possess physical bodies. In their exalted states as deities, they produce spirit children that grow and mature in the spiritual realm. The first spirit born was Jesus. Afterwards Lucifer was born along with the rest of us. So, Mormonism teaches that we all pre-existed in the spirit realm having been produced from the union of god and his goddess wife. Therefore, we all existed in spirit form before coming down down and entering the bodies of human babies that are being born on earth. During this ‘compression' into the infant state, the memories of their pre-existence is 'veiled.'
God the father, who is called Elohim, was concerned for the future salvation of the people on earth. In the heavenly realm, the Father had a plan for the salvation of the world. Jesus endorsed the Father's plan. Lucifer did not. Lucifer became jealous and rebelled. In his rebellion he convinced a large portion of the spirits existing in heaven to side with him and oppose god. God being more powerful then they, cursed these rebellious spirits to become demons. They can never be born in human bodies.

It's all about exchanging secret handshakes and other stolen Masonic symbols in the temples they build with all the money you're supposed to give them. Their founder used to do pagan divining rituals for spare change.
