It is very common actually. Why not tip someone who has made you feel that much better about yourself. Whether its just maintaing a look or giving you a whole new one, don't they deserve the same good feeling? It shows them your appreciation. Good job, keep doing what you are doing :)

A finical counselor told me to never tip more than 20%. In fact he recommended either 20% or 0%. If they did less than an excellent job, stiff 'em. They'll know to do better next time. I haven't built up the courage to stiff someone for mediocre service, so I tip at 15%. If you hairdresser does a good job all the time, tip 20%. Otherwise, tip lower.

And honestly, with all the hairdressers around, if you aren't getting service that's worthy of 20%, why are you a repeat customer? Go someplace else.

It is common, and not necessary, but it should be. Most hairdressers, particularly young ones just starting out, do not make a lot of money on haircuts alone. Most of the money for haircuts goes to the owner of the salons they work for, and there is very little for them. Also, they pay for their own equipment and some supplies and a pair of scissors may cost $300. They rely on tips as part of their salary, and they depend on that salary just as your or I do.

If a hairdresser owns his/her own salon, you should still tip them, as their expenses are very high and they may also have salaries to pay. You may also simply want to tip a hairdresser for doing a good job, and for being kind and courteous. I've been going to my hairstylist for over 10 years. She's very good, professional, and for her efforts, I tip her 33%. It's well worth it.

It is somewhat common, but not at all necessary. They don't expect it, but if they do a good job and you really liked their service, it's really generous to tip something as small as 5 bucks.
