There are a lot of quality applicants for police jobs. What are you bringing to the table? Just before I retired from my Chief's job I needed to fill three vacancies in the department. I got 35 applications for those three jobs. Six were applicants from other departments. Twenty-two of them had Associate Degrees in criminal justice. Three had bachelor degrees. The other four had no experience or advanced education. Care to guess which applicants were at the bottom of the list?
Some states will allow you to put yourself though the law enforcement academy. It is no guarantee that you will be hired but it does make you more marketable. In Wyoming, you can attend the state's police academy (13 weeks) for about $4,000.

It's a tough job.

You could try going to school with a major in criminalogy, but you will still probably need to go through an academy. Since most police academies are run by police departments, you probably won't be able to get into a police academy without going through a police department.

All the federal budget cuts and deficit spending affecting the states. I don't know about you, but I feel that my local law enforcement agencies should not have been taking all of the budget cuts they have over the past 5-6 years. They are after all my front-line defense against trouble of any kind.

Sorry too, if you did not want to hear the cruxt of the problem.

To my knowledge you can go through a police academy on your "own" bill which will get you state certified. Once you have that you could apply to agencies. But why pay for it yourself when an agency can pay for it?

You should be able to enter into academy and pay it yourself, I know here where I live I can enter into the Academy and the cost is $1500.00 not much to pay for the great benefits you can get later.

There is no other way I know of, unless you have connections who can intercede in your behalf. If you have this, it is all downhill for you.
