I'm a former Deputy Sheriff, and I hope that I can answer your question.

When you're speaking of "Mace", I'm assuming that you mean a CN chemical agent used in self-defense. This agent was used many years ago by police officers, and it was relatively effective. Unlike CS, which is tear gas, CN would react quicker to the subjects eyes.

Later on, departments went to OC ( oleoresin capsicum ) spray and discarded their CN sprays. The pepper gas works so much better.

But... if you insist upon MACE, then I would recommend anything from a company called, "DEF-TECH" . They also make a very good pepper spray in a variety of delivery systems.

Most of the answers here are good, with one exception, depending on where you live, chemical mace, is considered a weapon and you need a license to carry it!!!! Which is usually a fire arms I. D. Card, for most Northern States. I would stick to "Smith and Wesson" just like for guns, they make a very good canister of Mace. A word of caution here, if you use it on someone, it had better be very clear to the police that you had no other choice!!! This is not something to carry and use just for petty reasons! Also consider that any attacker can get anything you might think you can use away from you and use it on you!
Without a proper self defense class or some instruction, don't bother carrying the stuff. Nor is it a good idea to use Air freshener as a blow torch! The top of the can will melt, before you do anyone any damage and it may blow up in your face and hands! Just because it was seen in a movie or on T.V. don't try it.
Some advice here, if you truly believe you are in danger, serious danger, go straight to the police! Don't try and take care of this yourself. If it's an ex boyfriend, husband, a good way to deter the threat, at a low cost to you, is to document your problem. Find a notary and have them seal a letter addressed to your local chief of police, state in that letter that you take the threats against your life seriously, you are not suicidal, or have any mental problems, and if something happens to you, they should immediately suspect, "name the person" and sign it, witness it, and have the notary seal it.
Send a copy to the chief of police, certified mail, he has to sign for it, he then has to put it on file in most towns for a year.
Send a copy to the person your afraid of, let them know your not playing with them and they had better pray nothing does happen to you or the cops will be saying hello to them.
The last copy, you leave with your best friends or family, to have on hand in case something happens.
As someone else advised you, don't attempt to confront anyone! Man or woman, go straight to a police station, pull up to a cruiser, or if you have to hit the cruiser, to get a police attention. Lay on the horn, keep a cell phone with you at all times, and flee the area, running away is always you're best defense. If your home, do not open the door or let them in, no matter what they say! Call the police immediately, tell them the police are on the way, call neighbor's get people out in front of your home or in the hallway, criminals don't like extra eyes watching them. Be strong, don't fall for the, "I just want to talk" ploy and open the door or put down the car window. If your at this point, there is nothing to talk about anymore.
[Also, keep track of all harrassing phone calls, time and date of the call, if they show up at work have another employee witness them being there, you might need them to confirm for the police, that the person actually came to your place of work. Diddo for neighbor's and family, make sure you add this to your letter to the police...stalking laws have been adopted in many states, you need to prove it happened.]

i agree with what the fomer deputy said that is good quality mace spray! i personally dont go any where with out some kind of pepper spray being a young woman and everything!! if you cant find a good pepper spray though that you can keep with you at all times, then do the next best thing get hair spray the kind that you ahve to spay in a can , keep a travel size bottle in your purse at all times, or get some perfume or guys cologne and keep it in your purse at all times, it doesn't have to be the expensive kind either !!! just something that sprays and can distract the attacker, so you can get the heck away and get help as soon as possible, plus keep air freshner like glade in your car it will have hte same effect as the perfume and if need be keep a lighter with you to spray on to the hairspray or cologne it will immedialty go up in flames and cuase a barirer between you and your attacker which will buy you some time too . and hold your keys striaght out in front of you the point on the keys edge is sharp and if you need to you can jab your attacker with it. and if all else fails scream as loud as you can like your cheerring on your favoirte team or on a rollercoster ride, you should scream to attract people attention and create a big scene to where people will wonder why your screaming and hopefully they will see you need help. and also try kicking thme in their genitals if your attacker is a man kick him in his privates, for females do the same it will cuase them both pain for a few moments and you can try to get away. try not to panic stay calm so u can think and carryout a means of action to get to safty!! I hope these safety tips help!!! and above all use practical commmon sense!!
