If you don't have any Maple syrup you can take brown sugar about 2 cups , 1 stick of butter and a bottle of Karo syrup first melt your butter then add brown sugar and then add a bottle of brown Karo syrup then bring to boil . Then turn down heat add 1 tsp vanilla and simmer for about 3 minutes not to long just enough time to let the Butter & Vanilla flavor to set in .Cool down and serve with your favorite flap jacks...

If you are using it in a recipe, you can probably substitute a regular sugar syrup for maple. It won't have the flavor, though. I don't know if they make a maple extract, but you might want to look into it to add to the recipe as well.
