my friends say that i should be careful of buying goods in NY cos most of them are fake. i intend to buy one in a big shop in manhathan, which offers crazy sale!
Any advice?

As a NY'er-Let me help u out here:
Yes, B&H is Fantastic, but they are slightly higher then some.Look for whats on sale. Adorama, Alkit, and Whillobys are also very good. I have purchased in all.
I would NOT buy any electronics from anyone off the street/table, even if the items are shrink wrapped. thats the stuff that doesn't work(likethe VCR a friend once bought that had Rocks inside the unit!). There are some stores where you can get a good deal if you Hondel. Ask to handle what you want to buy. Most will let you try out the display model.
You can also go to "BIG" box stores like comp usa, Best Buy, Circut City, even The Apple Store will have good deals on cameras(manhattan has 2 Apple stores).

that might be true. alot of cameras from new york online shops or small street shops will sell you a fake camera. they will also sell you gray market items, refurbished and even broken cameras without you even knowing. i wouldnt risk buying one from there. yeah. B & H camera is a great place to shop for one. also try Newegg.com, they carry a large selection of digital cameras for a low price. also most cameras purchased at newegg come with free shipping and a free 1 gb memory card.

I agree with Koko. B&H Photo is very trustworthy. Check their rating at http://www.resellerratings.com
Adorama in NY is also pretty well-rated.
Check both of these places out on-line before you go.
Don't go in any small sleezy looking shops.
