If by steps taken you mean strategies then the first is that they forced Germany to fight on multiple fronts at once. Between that, the relentless bombing of German cities and industry, and the attrition on the Eastern Front, the Allies wore Germany down. The major battles that impacted the war for the Allies positively in the 2nd half of the war were Stalingrad, Kursk, El-Alemein, D-day, Battle of the Bulge, and the constant Soviet offensives.
