What type of icing should I use for a COOKIE CAKE?

I usually just bake regular cakes, but tomorrow I'm baking a cookie cake with M&M's. I need to decorate the top with frosting but am not sure of what type of frosting is best for such a cake because it's my first time. Would anyone be able to give suggestions and/or recipes. It would be greatly appreciated.

I think buttercream would be really good, my favorite buttercream is Rick's special buttercream on allrecipes.com
