My sister gave me a ring that is beautiful and I believe it is celtic. Is there any meanings or background behind them? Thanks for your help.

are you talking about the Clauddah?

2 hands converging on a crown with a heart suspended above the crown?

if so it has different meanings depending on whom gave it to you. but it signifies great love or friendship.

the first one was made by a man that was taken as a prosioner and forced to make gold jewlery for the enemy nobles. while imprisioned he stole bits of gold and forged them into a perfect ring. the hands represent friendship. the crown loyalty and the heart love. this was his wedding gift to his sweetheart.

after that it has become a traditional wedding ring, but can double as a friendship ring.

if it is a simple knotwork ring it is mostly are. there is little spiritual beliefs in the knotwork atr other than the belief in reincarnation.

some new age people believe that the neverending knotwork will trap evil spirits and because they will think that they are continuing to move foreward will never escape the knot.

It depends. Most celtic rings are knot-work of some sort. And yes, the knots can have meanings. Look for a similar design on the web and compare it to your ring to see if there is a meaning.

A claddagh ring is a promise ring when given by a guy to a girl, a friendship ring otherwise. Yes, a promise ring is very much like an engagement ring, but often given when both giver and recipient are too young to formally get engaged.

They are just jewelry, I'm afraid!

But, it's very thoughtful of your sister, ain't it?

Cheers!
