Yes, they want people to have their minds on what they are doing, rather than on music. It's a matter of safety. I like music too, but it's best not to have it in that setting.

Music can be a good way to motivate workers. If they like the music they will be more happy and this promotes a better work environment. But in many cases it can also be a distraction. Some people suggest that music may actually reduce production. When using heavy machinery, personal listening divices should NEVER be used. They reduce the workers awarness of their surroundings and can result in accidents. Not to mention if a fire alarm sounds and they cannot hear it. One stereo for all to listen to is a better solution as it doesn't prevent workers from hearing others or their machine. I have worked in two factories. One was a food factory which didn't allow music, and the other was a plastic manufacturing company which did allow music
(a stereo, not personal music players).

Many corporations pipe music in to their factories for productivity reasons. It is even referred to as "mood music", as it often helps to cover some factory noise and put workers in a more productive mood. Others do permit the use of radios in select areas and some even permit the use of ear phones on some jobs.

When I was working at a factory, we were allowed to use headphones. And, no accidents.
