To have free will one must have a choice.
To make a choice one must have sufficient information.
Therefore to have free will one must have sufficient information.
Here the definition of choice I’m using:
- the act of selecting from a number of possibilities
Now in order to select from the possibilities, the possibilities must be known.
Here are some examples:
A child puts his hand on a hot stove and doesn’t know that the stove is hot.
- The child didn’t make the choice to burn himself because he/she didn’t know the possibilities.
A child puts his hand on a hot stove to see how hot it is.
- The child does make the choice to burn himself because he has the information that the stove is hot.
A person goes to a party, and has to leave at ten. Unbeknownst to him/her, the door has been locked and he/she can't get out. Ten o'clock arrives and he/she is having such a good time that he/she decides to stay and never discover that the door is locked.
The person doesn’t make a choice to stay.
- It may seem that way but leaving is no long a possibility. Therefore the person cannot select it.

"Opportunity is the only requirement for making a choice"
I think we are saying the same thing. Opportunity to me means it is possible for me to do something. And choice is if I select the opportunity.

I have to know what the Opportunity is to do it.

Opportunity is the only requirement for making a choice, however understanding the consequences of a choice is what requires knowledge.
Edit: Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought you made the statement that to make a choice one must have sufficient knowledge.
Edit2: It may just be a matter of semantics between us. You would certainly have to know a choice was available to make one. I agree. But you certainly do not have to have any knowledge of the consequences to make the choice.

Assuming you're looking for the Christian answer for this: JESUS.
God gave information through the bible. The information is backed up by a man (who is historically proven to have been alive at the time and place, spoken and performed miracles to crowds and been crucified under pontious pilot) if that's not enough information to base some type of belief system on, I don't know what is.
Whether or not you are a Chrisian, the beauty of religion is that we have it to hepl us discover the answers...If we had them all, we wouldn't need religion. I truly believe that some peope were sent by whatever is beyond us to help us learn and discover the possibilities of this world.
I hope this makes sense.

You can choose to do something without knowing the consequences of your actions. The new information you gain as a result will impact your future decisions. The same applies to spiritual growth just as it does with your growth from child to adult. You can burn yourself badly with your own words and actions too. If we learn, we grow. If we don't we keep messing up. The Bible can teach you the principles you need to have a very good starting point, but you yourself must learn how to apply those principles. Peace be with you

The person did make the choice to stay, by not even trying to leave the party. Had the person tried to leave, the person could have made the choice to stay or go like the person was supposed to do. If the person decides to leave, will have to find a way out.

The bible has the answer to any question you ask you just have to research it and not go by word of mouth. If someone gives you an answer ask them to show it to you in the bible. I have went with all of my questions to many different religions and personally Jehovah's Witnesses have made sence of all of my questions showing proof within the bible. Different people have different opinions, but they made the most sense to me at least. Don't be afraid to research youself or have someone that study's the bible for a living show you the answers within the bible, compare answers, which one makes more sense to you?

I think the Bible gives sufficient information to anyone to allow them a reasonable choice. In fact, it is very simplistic if you really think about it.
God made you. God wants you to obey him. God sent Jesus so you might once again be made perfect. God gives you the choice whether or not to believe in Jesus and his promise to you. No one can be forced to believe so the locked door scenerio will not stand up logically. It is always a matter of choice. God never locks the door to anyone without giving them every opportunity to decide for themselves what to believe. If you are talking about not being aware of what God wants...(not aware of the locked door), then that is because you have not made the effort to learn of it or have not as of yet been told of it. Once you become aware of the Christian belief, it is up to you to seek him. If you don't, then you have made your choice.

You must find two or three witness of the same, in the word it is confirmed that way
Take one verse and the key word, and look up other passages on the same
It really is simple
Like God is light
Look up light.

God said His Law was now written in the peoples' hearts. We automatically and naturally know, and can choose, between what is right and what is wrong.

You do not, save for God's grace, know or care about the possibilities of heaven or hell. Therefore free will to do as you please with one destination only. Salvation comes from God, not yourself.
