I find the best place to buy mutts (aka mixed-breeds) is the local shelter or humane society.

Hang on. First off, there is NO SUCH THING as a "BAGLE". It is a mutt. Mixed breed. "DESIGNER" breed. No ethical or reputable breeder would even think of mating a purebred Beagle with a different breed. You should ONLY buy dogs from reputable or ethical breeder. If you researched, the Basset and the Beagle are prone to A LOT of genetic health problems, that's why you should only buy one from a reputable and ethical breeder who screens their dogs of hereditary diseases. Reputable and ethical breeders breed to improve a PURE breed.

Take your step-daughter down to the local SPCA and let her interact with the dogs there. Consider a Beagle mix as they are really good with children.

Take a think about getting this dog for a 7 year old child. It will be HER dog, right? Well if someone OWNS a dog, they are responsible for walking the dog, grooming the dog, feeding the dog, paying for the dog's medical bills, taking the dog to training classes, socializing the dog and playing with the dog. Do you really think a 7 year old will do ANY of these tasks (yes I know she will play with the dog. She may even help groom the dog)?

I might sound a bit harsh but consider getting the dog for the FAMILY. Not as a gift. The novelty of the puppy/dog will last a week, maybe even a month. It won't last for the next 10-15+ years.

Remember that NO ethical and reputable breeder will EVER sell you a puppy as a gift.

If you live in the U.S, a really good website to find dogs in shelters is http://www.petfinder.com . Just type in what breed you want (it will also show breed mixes) and your state/zip code and that will show a long list of dogs up for adoption. Don't forget to RESEARCH, RESEARCH and RESEARCH about the breed/s you are getting. All are prone to different health issues and they ALL have a different temperament.

Funny, I just saw an article about that:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17616672/wid/11915773

I got my LaSheplie (aka a young adult lab/shepherd/border collie mix from the shelter) a few years ago for a $60 adoption fee - best deal I've ever gotten!

Either try your local shelter (there are some great dogs waiting in shelters for a good home), or ask your vet or local Responsible Pet Owners Association for a recommendation for a responsible breeder - please don't subsidize irresponsible backyard "breeders" or puppy mills that are producing these mixed-breed pups.

Hopefully, the dog you select for your step-daughter will be her beloved pet for many years to come, so if she wants a pup it's very important to find a good healthy, quality one who has had a good start in life from a responsible breeder. Please don't rush into buying her a pup without researching the breeder first - if her birthday is coming up very soon, you can surpise her with a card in a box telling her you're getting her a puppy, and then when you find a good breeder you can take her with you to pick out the puppy - she'll LOVE that! On her birthday, she'll be able to focus on the party, and on take-home-the-puppy day, she'll be able to focus on the puppy. Doing it that way will also allow you the time to go dog-supply shopping together and to get your home ready for the new dog, and to "puppy-proof" your home.

That's sweet. My grandma got my brother a terrier mix for Easter when I was seven and he was six. Look into the dogs at your local animal shelter. You might not find a beagle/basset hound, but there will probably be another smallish mutt dog that will make her just as happy. And having owned three dogs, all of whom have been mutts, there is nothing wrong or undesirable about a mutt. They're as sweet and affectionate and wonderful as any purebred.

Most REPUTABLE breeders do not actually create these mixes. Your options are: puppy mill, pet store (i.e. the temporary stop for a former puppy mill dog), a backyard or hobby breeder, or your local animal shelter.

I advocate none of those options, personally, except the last one.

Your 7-year-old probably doesn't care whether or not her dog is a "designer dog." What will excite her about the dog will be its warm snuggles and its wonderful doggie kisses and how fun it is to run around in the park with.

Since its a mix, you can get one very cheap at the adoption center. Maybe rescue a dog from the hound. Try the newspapers, or maybe one of your friends knows a good breeder. P.S i woud prefer not to buy one at a pet store if they have one, because puppies and cats there usually have health and temper problems.

I don't know specifically who might have one, but Missouri is the largest dog kennel state. You might check the web for Missouri dog breeders or search bagles in Missouri. I would be suprised if you can't find one there. They have everything.
