i'd like to make short films so i'd need to edit and stuff

I agree with the previous answers - stick with MiniDV. Hard drive camcorders have improved a lot, but the video can be a bit 'soft' and colour accuracy isn't as good.

You need one that takes Mini-DV. HD camcorders are aimed towards amateurs because unless you intend to keep all your video files on an external hard drive with huge amounts of storage, burning them on DVD is simply not a good way to archive your material.

If you're making short films especially, you want to be able to keep that raw footage indefinitely, and have as less compression as possible. The HD camcorders will compress your videos (as will mini-dv, but not as much) and putting them on DVD is just nonsense.

Go with the Mini-DV. Even the HD prosumers cameras that videographers use are mini-dv.

Think of it this way, once you painted on canvas, would you rather have the canvas or a photograph of it?

my dad said that the ones with hard-drive are no good.. he said the ones that uses tapes (new ones use MiniDV, old ones use Hi8) are still the best

isn,t there like a (consumers report)
type thing on the internet that deal with electronics
and hardware ?
