If I understand your question...I think ASL is imperative to Deaf people and their culture. It is who they are, it is their cornerstone. Educationally, if they are able to learn a language at an early age (that being ASL) it acts as a gateway to learn other languages. The early years in a child's development in so important for language. If it takes someone 12 years to feel comfortable with the English language you now have a bunch of wasted time that could have been used on other cognitive developments.

Any Deaf person who has anything to do with the Deaf culture will tell you ASL makes them who they are, and they wouldn't ever give it up! I talk to Deaf people everyday.

I know sign language and I love to talk to my deaf friends and dad with it. It's fun to learn and use! And just for the ignorant it's not the only way for them to communicate. My dad can read lips and talk, only sometimes do i havee to actually sign to him or vice versa.

I know sign language very well and i communicate with the deaf on a weekly basis and many of them tell me it's the easiest way to communicate and they wouldn't change it at all

I don't often have occasion to be around someone who is deaf; any time I am, however, I wish I knew how to sign so as to be able to talk to them with more than a "hello" or "thank you."

i used baby sign language on my daughter, it was really easy and fun. I've tried using sign language with my friends during high school to pass secrets. b/c nobody knew what we were doing or saying.

i think sign language is really neat and they should have classes to teach you sign language in middle schools. just like they have spanish and french classes.

Hear??????? Hello, SEE would be the better word! It's the only way, to communicate, other than typing! Hello. What were you thinking? Finger language?
