Yes, person-to-person transmission is possible. Most commonly through fecal-oral contact, evidence suggests that it may be transmitted by hands and fomites (inanimate objects and surfaces). It can be spread in a hospital setting rather quickly. 2 - 3 % of people are symptom-free carriers.

From the CDC: People in good health usually don’t get C. difficile disease. People who have other illnesses or conditions requiring prolonged use of antibiotics and the elderly are at greater risk of acquiring this disease. The bacteria are found in the feces. People can become infected if they touch items or surfaces that are contaminated with feces and then touch their mouth or mucous membranes. Healthcare workers can spread the bacteria to other patients or contaminate surfaces through hand contact.

Very contagious. Pts often Rxd Flagyl--tastes gross! The way I understand it, everybody has C-diff in intestines. If the bacteria that keeps the C-diff at appropriate levels becomes low, C-diff takes over. My daughter had it one time after being repeatedly on antibiotics for several months for strep throat. Spread when people infected with it don't wash hands after using the bathroom and spread the germs on to other surfaces, you touch surface and touch face, you get horrible bloody stinky diarrhea and stomach cramps and probably a rectal exam.

C. dif. is a very common bacteria and present in just about any environment or person. Why some individuals develop an enteral (gut) growth, is unknown.

There is some evidence that it could be involved in the development of heart disease.
Are You having abdominal discomfort or indigestion?
Go and speak with your provider and ask if they could test you.
This will likely, feel better about the potentials.

Yes, it can be transmitted by contact. Just so that you know...alcohol based hand sanitizers that are so popular today will NOT kill this bacteria and, therefore, will not protect you. You should wash your hands thoroughly when you are around this person until they are over it. Best Wishes!

Yes, it's true. Wash your hands frequently, and encourage your friend to wash his hands too.
