Well, most interests like painting and sports are easy to handle, but not this one. My 11 year old daughter is MUCH smarter than she should be, she seems to have more wisdom than I do, so I want to encourage her intelligence. But her main interest is phychology, like helping people with their problems. She reads lots of books about people with eating disorders and emotional disorders, and child abuse, and the thing she wants most is to help people with their big problems. How can I encourage her interest to keep it alive?!?!?

Well congratulate yourself on having raised a giving and loving young girl! Those are excellent qualities to foster!
Once she gets into high school she can take a class in it. For now you can encourage her by helping her find volunteer situations where she is truly helping - old age homes are a great place to start - they really enjoy having young people around.
- another idea is animal shelters if she likes animals
- working at the ymca or similar organization helping with smaller kids in after-school programs
You will probably get lots of good ideas...Good Luck!
btw It's spelled - psychology

Well, I am that age, too, and I am interested in paleontology (that's the study of dinosaurs) and my parents really don't care. And if she is much smarter maybe she should be a grade higher (like 6th if she's in 5th) You don't need to encourage her because if she loves what she does then she'll keep doing it. If you really want to encourage her then take her strengths and put it to good use. Or ask her questions about it to make it seem as if she was the smartest kid in the world.

Wow...I would be worried if my 11 year old was that entrenched in mental health. I read all of those books because I was struggling with an eating disorder myself and I wanted to find out what was going on with me. Maybe she is ill and she covers it by saying she just wants to help others. I could be wrong, but I don't think it would hurt to be a little overly cautious in this situation. Please be sure she is okay.

Does her school have a peer intervention group? She could volunteer for that if they do. If they don't maybe have her talk to the school to see if they can set one up.
What they mostly do is when two students [or more I would suppose] don't get along they sit down with the peer adviser and help them figure out what's going on and why they can't get along. It's a really great program.

Sounds like she has a gift if this is her true love she will continue to pursue this later in life. Maybe when she gets a little older she can do some volunteer work in a hospital or some other community service that deals with helping people.

My daughter is interested in Chemistry and is only 10. She's been very Science-minded since she was little.
The best thing for it... a library card. I take my daughter on Saturdays to pick out books on any subject she wants, but it's usually a science book and most of those are chemistry or biology.

It sounds like she's doing a pretty good job of keeping her interest alive herself. Maybe you could talk with her school counselor and see if there is some place she could volunteer, although 11 is kind of young. Maybe a day care for disadvantaged children or something like that.

Sounds like she would be a great candidate for a mission. Check out the below web site. They have missions for kids going into grade 7 and 8. It is geared for them to help others. I think it would be a great experience for her to come back with. Check it out!
