I went to Catalina with a boyfriend once. It was lovely (too bad he was a jerk!).
1. Take a picnic lunch (a baguette, a block of cheese, some fruit, etc.) and eat near the water.
2. Rent a tandem bike and ride around town.
3. Rent the paddle boats in the harbor, or go kayaking.
4. Have a hand-dipped ice cream bar in the afternoon as a snack.
5. Enjoy an early romantic dinner before the last ferry back to land.
I'd recommend not staying the night. It's pricey. The rooms are all small, and the prices are exorbitant because inn-keepers have to make a YEAR'S worth of money in a few months (they're not open in winter, usually).

If you are planning at least a few days, take the dinner cruise to the Isthmus and if the flying fish are running, even better. So much fun.
Snorkel in the bay at Avalon. We are divers and go to Catalina to dive but the snorkeling in the bay is very good.
We like Descanso Beach very much.
We did not have the problem with seasickness on the trip over - and I get seasick easily. The shuttles are very good and we've gone several times. Unless it is a rough day and you are prone, don't worry about the dramamine.

It can be a great trip, but I have some advice for you. The boat ride is very bumpy so make sure to take some dramamine at least an hour before you board. I can't count how many times I've seen people get sick including myself!
Second, if you're staying over night, make sure you know what the place looks like and read traveller reviews. My boyfriend I paid a small fortune for a total dump. A good place to look is www.tripadvisor.com.

Oh your going to have so much fun. I love Avalon! I would just plan on relaxing hanging out at the beach, but there is a short hike you can do up to a look out. There is also paddle boats, and the glass bottom boat. There is also a cafe on the south end of the board walk that has the best lattes and coffie.

If you go to the Chamber of Commerce website they have ROMANTIC GETAWAY specials with good discounts, free messages and stuff...Rent a golf cart, they are a blast.. Have fun..
