I'm not one to tell you whether or not to believe in anything. But why can't you? I'm a Christian and I believe in God because the belief of God is believeable. I've been through so many troubles in my life and I'm still young. I admit that I haven't always believed a God so great ever existed, but when I pray to Him and when I feel close to something so powerful and awesome. It's an amazing feeling that nothing has ever given me. I will also admit that all Christians are hypocrites for saying stuff that you HAVE to be good (which is true) but you have to understand that Christians are people too. They make mistakes but God will always forgive them. And that's something truly amazing as well. So I don't know I guess you don't have to believe in Him but...there are so many reasons to believe in Him.

Sometimes, we realize that everything in the world is ultimately meaningless unless we do what God wants, unless we are in His will. We can gain money and possession, but they don't satisfy. We know that when we die, it will all fall away and mean nothing. That is why we look up to the heavens. That is why we hear the voice of God calling us.
I read many of the answers to your question, some of them were really uncalled for and rude.

Consider this : An archaeologist digs deep into the desert sand and finds a piece of an old clay pot. After his investigations, this archaeologist can tell us, from this little old piece of dusty clay, so much about the civilisation that existed thousands of years ago that produced it; he can tell us about the types of ovens, temperatues, and dyes that they worked with, the raw materials that they used, and thus assess the level of their artistic skill and technological ability, etc. All this from a small piece of clay lying in the desert.
Did this archaeologist ever see the civilisation that produced this pot ?
How does he know that it ever existed ?
He knows because he saw that the piece of clay was produced by someone who designed it, and shaped it, and had the intelligence to be able to heat it and produce the pot, and not only that, they also had the ability to colour it and make it look beautiful.
Design ==> Designer.
To the archaeologist the existence and intricacy of the piece of pottery is conclusive proof of the existence, intelligence and ability of the people who made it.
Look around you: at the beautiful sunset on a summer evening, at the moon and the stars on a cloudless night, at the water that you drink, at the trees and how they grow from tiny seeds.
Think about yourself: your eyes with which you see, your ears with which you hear, your tongues with which you taste and talk, your hands and your feet, your heart and your brain.
Consider how these things are so complex in themselves and yet work together in such perfect harmony.
From the movement of the galaxies to the complexities of the interaction of molecules, from the dynamics of eco-systems to the intricacies of DNA, all lead to the obvious fact of the existence of the great Wisdom, Knowledge and Power that allows our Universe to exist and function.
To any perceptive person the existence and intricacy of creation is conclusive proof of the Existence, Knowledge and Wisdom of the One who creates, organises and sustains it.
Most people naturally recognise the existence of the Creator, and we find reference to the Creator in all cultures and religions. Even the atheists, communists and (disbelieving) scientists cannot avoid this reality, but avoid the term 'creator', for phrases like 'Mother Nature' and 'the amazing way nature has designed...'
How strange in the face of this, that many today reject the belief in the existence of the Creator. Perhaps this is due more to fashion and the desire to justify a materialistic attitude to life rather than real observation and comprehension of reality.
Something stranger still, and perhaps another reason for the trend to deny the Creator, are those who claim that a man, or men, who walked on the earth, breathed air, who had bodies and souls subject to the Laws of the Universe, are the Creator, or manifestations of the Self-Subsistent One.
This is of course a complete contradiction in terms. Something cannot be the Creator and created at the same time, needing air, food and drink and being self-sufficient, being temporary and eternal!
If you are one of those who believe that a man such as Buddha, or Krishna, or Jesus is the Creator and Controller, then think again.
We were created from a drop of despised fluid, in which was a microscopic sperm, which in turn fertilised a microscopic egg and we grew in our mother's womb in stages predetermined, over which we had no control. We came from our mother's womb, urinating and defecating, needing constant attention and care. Without food we will die, without air we will die ... and then such a one is God?
Indeed any intelligent person would recognise exactly how dependant life, the universe and everything is on its Creator. Our dire need for His help makes itself plain in times of great distress.
Imagine yourself in an aeroplane and you know it is going to crash...
Who do you turn to for help then ?
Or on a ship in the sea, thrown helplessly up and down by towering waves ...
There will have been a situation at one time or the other in your life when you called upon your Creator alone, forgetting everyone and everything else, hoping, trusting, wishing that the Being you know in your heart and soul that has power and control over all things would help you. The only One you know can save you!

God would agree if he had any interest in what people believe. I don't see how it matters. God isn't like Tinkerbelle.
Esther: you crack me up. Now you've done it. I don't believe people will go to hell for not believing, but I know your prayer is going to work. What a dirty trick this asker has played on himself provoking you to pray in Jesus name. I feel I have no choice now but to join you in that prayer. Serve's him right. Bless you.

Okay. I respect that you see no reason to believe. But. There is a God and He loves you. Please just stop and think about it for a moment. You have done wrong in life, correct? Well, that is called sin. After death there is going to be a judgment. If you refuse God's offer of reconcilation, His son, you will go to hell after you die. Right now you don't believe in any of this. But please consider this: that you do not believe does not mean these things are not going to happen. There is a heaven, there is a hell, there will be a judgment, and it would be wise of you to re-consider your standing on all of this. When I said that God loves you, He does. He allowed His son to die on a cross to pay for every sin you have ever committed.
I pray in Jesus' name that He guide you to the truth and that the truth shall set your free.

Following God and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ can give you meaning and purpose in life. It can be a blueprint to what life is for. Tue happiness comes from serving others and not you self. Living for yourself only can be superficial, transitory, and shallow. true happiness comes from being kind, altruistic, and doing good to others. Believing in God provides the incentive and motivation to do this.

Here is a list of reasons...
1. The "Cambrian Explosion"-
This was a period, shown in fossil records, where a large number of unrecorded creatures sprang into life. The amount of time it took for all of these creatures to spring into life is equivalent to one minute in a 24 hour period. As you hopefully noticed, this doesn't fit into the gradual change that was proposed by the "Darwin Theory".
There are some people that say there were creatures that had been cultivating in a secure location and when they were "released" it caused many of them to rapidly split into many species. This, once again, is not possible because of the amount of time necessary for new species to be formed.
Some people also like to entertain the idea that there were soft bodied creatures in the pre-cambrian stage and that they did not leave fossils. But, to date we have a large number of soft bodied creatures leaving fossils.
As of today the best answer for explaining the Cambrian Explosion is... GOD!
2.The human mind-
You may be thinking what does that mean. But have you ever thought about the difference between the mind (or soul) and the brain. This is a completely relevant question and is actually one that has been unanswered by scientist.
When you look at a doctor that is reading someone's brain waves they get changes and such things. But there is no way to read what one thinks. All that you can ever do is read electrical pulses from one place in the brain to another place. I suggest that you research this topic on your own. There is to much to explain and I don't understand it well enough to explain it. Just remember that this is a question that stumps even the best of scientist! So don't think to quickly in creating an answer for this question! Also consider this... Scientist that believe that mind and brain are the same also believe that mind is created when the brain reaches a certain of intelligence. That one mean that one day a computer would be able to have emotions, feelings, thoughts that you can't reach, understanding of self and also the ability to lie! Ha ha... that will be the day. But computer can only pass electrical impulses. (Thats what we would be without minds, computers)
3.The Earth alone can support life-
The Earth is the perfect place for life! Here is a list why.
-perfect distance from the sun
-our atmosphere protects us from most asteroids, comets
-perfect rotation and tilt for seasons
-the best type of galaxy for life (least common)
-best type of star for a sun
-perfect atmosphere for protection from sun
-perfect atmosphere for breathing
-covered with water
This is a small list! BUT, just with this small list if you mess with one of these things it could affect all the rest. For instance you change our tilt, one side could be frozen and the other side hot... year round. You change the location of Earth relative to the Sun... We will either be frozen or burning. Say we didn't freeze or burn but started out with shelter. What would that do to our water? would there be any? would it be frozen? Not to mention that the distance from the sun also changes atmosphere!!!! as well as the density of your planet. Now. If you look at other galaxies. They are to crazy for life. Period. Not even a possibility.
4. complexity of life-
I am sure that you just say. O not this! Evolution solves that by EVOLUTION! But... Plain and simple it doesn't, at least not with the theories we have to day. The Darwin theory has been disproved multiple times but people keep trying to make ways around it.
Back to complexity of life. You remember about cells? What you learned in middle school. Well guess what! That doesn't even touch the surface of the complexity of cells and services it provides to your body! Check it out there is way to much to talk about! AMAZING! Just check this whole thing out!
5. No possible way for something to come from nothing! -
Scientist once taught you that something cannot come from nothing... right? Well it is true! But now scientist are saying that it happened with the big bang!
There was a scientist, not sure of his name, that did an experiment that created proteins. Now proteins are the building blocks of life. His experiment consisted of creating the Earths atmosphere in its early stages and providing electricity (lightning). This is what created proteins in his experiment. The only problem with the experiment is that the atmosphere that he created is now excused by modern scientist in replace for a more accurate atmosphere. When the more accurate atmosphere is used and the experiment is re-done guess what you get?... You get... embalming ointment! Now how are you going to tell me that life started from embalming ointment?
Tying into the complexity of life, lets just say these proteins were created. to get to the next step, which is actual life, would be like nature creating a bunch of bricks, which already seems impossible, and then randomly a house is made out of them! Do you get it? A house is way less complex than any living creature! And you are going to tell me that nature can't build a house but it can build a human? or even a single celled organism (which by the way is amazingly complex)?
So these are just a few answers. You might want to consider that many scientist today believe in intelligent design. Also, Einstein believed intelligent design.
I suggest you take a more simple path first! Look at what you know. Do you see anything being created that something intelligent isn't behind?
Check out "The Case For A Creator". It will answer a lot of questions. And I think you want to believe... other wise why would you ask. I don't think you even believe that you are an atheist! Do you know much about intelligent design?
*I thought of another key point.
Have you ever thought about time? You see the funny thing is that if the universe was not created then that means that time and the universe (space) has existed forever!
That can't work because where did it come from in the first place? An infinite amount of time into the past is not possible. That would mean that it was just an ongoing cycle that always was! That is more illogical than believing in God himself! One key thing to think about is that most scientist recognize that at one point there was no universe or space.
Now the reason that this works with God is because before the universe and space there was NO time! Time is something that follows the laws of nature. But since God created nature and natural law he lived before time! Time is God created and therefore he lives outside of it. This is why the bible says God "lives from everlasting to everlasting."
When the bible says Jesus Christ is the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and Omega. It is talking about the universe, time and space.

By asking this question, you are actually trying to convince yourself not to believe in God. It is alright that you don't. One day, God will show your heart and understanding that He is there. He may be slow but He will be there.
