Of course we could. All civilizations throughout history have had a life cycle. Many ended (or split up) because of civil war. Given the political climate in this country over the last half century, it's very possible that some states may eventually say "Enough's enough", and vote to secede. Keep in mind, before every war in history, people said "It can't happen here. These are modern times. We're too civilized."

Something like that is always possible but the climate for such a thing is nowhere near existing at this time. It would take years of significant difference between people that began to influence state politics which would ultimately result in people polarizing into like factions. So in short, now? Today? NO! 20, 30, 50 years from now? All hypothetical, who knows, but I doubt it. The U.S.A has weathered diversity before and my gut feeling is we'd survive that diversity again.

We already did - the Civil War. It is highly unlikely that we could ever have another similar war.

We already had a civil war; I think we learned our lesson.

No. There is no moral issue (like slavery) in our times that would warrant such a rift.
