Miles per hour? I always wonder. They go fast but then slow down, but when they go really fast, how many mph do they ride?

I was on a "2" train from 42nd Street to 72nd Street and looked over at the motorman's speedometer and on one stretch he was doing 40.

It depends on what trains you mean. On the subway top speed is around 50mph. This only happens on very long stretches, such as the express run south of 125th Street or the run across Jamaica Bay between Broad Channel and the Rockaways. Commuter and intercity trains run faster. In the tunnel between Jamaica and Brooklyn the LIRR reaches about 60mph, and Amtrak trains can reach 80mph on rural stretches.
