Kodak's low end digital is a great little starter camera. I think it is called an "Easy Shoot" and sells for around $150. Check your local Wall Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc. Many answers here, when questioners ask about what to get, speak quite highly about it. The clue here is Eighth grader.... there are three classes of digital cameras, the consumer class, (view cameras) from around $350 down, the prosumer class (DSLR's) from $1000 down, and the professional class costing over $1000. I use a Pentax DSLR that sells for around $700 for my serious work, a small Toshiba view for snap shots and a very small "stick" type pocket "spy camera" for candid's. That spy cam, by the way cost me $ 40 several years ago at a camera show due it was the last one he had and was a demo and came only with it's stand an a usb cord.

Canon makes some of the best comsumer cameras on the market today. I dont know if she cares about imagine quality or not. If she wants pink, there is the Canon SD40. Its an average camera, not special or anything but I dont think its worth th $300. If you want the most bang for your buck and is slim and sexy, the SD600 is a great cheap alternative. Its around $250 and it takes great pictures. My sister owns one and I use it sometimes, its a great little camera. If you can swing a little more money there is also the SD800IS but its not as thin as the SD600 since it has IS or Imagine Stablization.
My vote is the SD600, its cheap (compared to other cameras) and it takes great pictures that I would want to print, if you ever wanted to.

For a cute and slick camera, I would recomment Sony's ultracompact series, which are really nice cameras for their class. However, they are relatively expensive. An alternative is Nikon's S series such as the S9, which are cheaper, don't have image stabilization, but has good image quality. Slightly less compact, but still respectable are Canon's SD series cameras such as the SD600 and SD630, which are slightly larger, but are still small enough for convenience. Casio cameras seem attractive because of their low prices and small sizes, but they have terrible image quality so I would stay away from them.

I'll agree with Koko on the SD600, but here's a review to help you decide if it's cute enough:

You might think about a Pentax Optio W20, because it's waterproof:

Or you might think about an Olympus Stylus 725SW, because it's waterproof and shock-resistant - good for an 8th grader. Here's a review for the 720SW, which is good also:

A polaroid izone 310. It has no optical zoom, but only costs 60 dollars (US) at newegg.com. It is 3.2 megapixels, which is rather low quality in current terms, but is more than enough for posting photos in myspace. There is a link for one below.

Canon Digital Elph. It comes in assorted colors and is small. I'd say rather cell phone shaped.
